Domain Names FAQ
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is the URL you choose for your website. It is the address for your website, and arguably the online representation of your business. Domain names can have a .com ending, or it can have many others, such as .net, .org, .edu, and more.
How do I get a Domain Name?
A domain name must be purchased and registered through a domain name registrar. There are several companies that you can purchase a domain name through, such as GoDaddy.com, Tucows.com, and Verio.com. Once you choose the registrar, you do a domain name search and see if the domain name you want is available. If it is not being used by someone else, you can purchase it.
Do I need to buy more than one Domain Name?
Some people feel that it is important to control their brand, so they will purchase a domain name with all the possible extensions, so that no one else can put up a website with a similar domain name. But, most businesses will more than survive with only one Domain Name. It really comes down to a personal choice.
I bought a Domain Name. Now what?
Now you need to find somewhere to host it and someone to design it. There are a lot of DIY design tools out there, but this is for the truly tech savvy. Even if you design your own website, it is advised that you have a professional to help you with the hosting. DNS settings are something that you should not try the guess-and-check method on.
